Sport en type 1 diabetes

Exercise and exercise is very good for you for many reasons (even if you do not have diabetes 😉 . You often feel much better mentally and physically when you have been on the move. However, sports and type 1 diabetes have some challenges.
But first, something about the benefits of exercise if you have type 1 diabetes:

  • You become more sensitive to insulin. This means that you need less insulin and the glucose control becomes easier. That gives less fluctuations in your blood sugars and it has a beneficial effect on your weight.
  • A lower chance of developing cardiovascular disease.
  • A beneficial effect on your HbA1C and Time in Range.

Another effect that you need to keep a close eye on is that by exercising the muscle activity and blood flow of the subcutaneous fat tissue improves. This allows the insulin to be absorbed more quickly and you can get hypos faster.

Also, exercising with type 1 diabetes is tailor-made

As you may already notice, it differs per day and in terms of kind of sport how you come out with your blood sugar. This can be quite difficult sometimes. Because also how you as a human being work, determines how your glucose is processed and therefore also how you work with your glucose values. Sometimes you do your best to do it as agreed, and then you still have that hypo or you still come out too high.

The adjustments required for sports are not only different in terms of person, but also in terms of type of sport and movement, the duration of the activity and which insulin pump / insulin pen / FGM / CGM you use.

So always discuss with your own treatment team how you can best deal with sports and type 1 diabetes. But keep moving!
